Malaysia PM Warns of Rising Geopolitical Rivalry, Strain on Global Order

(MENAFN) Malaysian Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim has cautioned that intensifying competition among major powers and weakening international agreement are placing growing pressure on the global system.

According to reports, Anwar made the comments during his speech at the 31st Nikkei “Forum on the Future of Asia” held in Tokyo.

He said, "The international system that supported decades of growth and development is under enormous strain," pointing to increasing stress on global trade structures driven by fragmentation, unilateral measures, and strategic competition.

He added that export controls and industrial strategies are now "increasingly shaped by geopolitical rivalry," warning that the "weaponizing economic interdependence" is the "most troubling" trend emerging from this environment.

Anwar also urged that the multilateral system should be "reformed and renewed" instead of being either abandoned or preserved in its current form, stressing the need for international institutions to evolve with changing global realities.

He further noted that ongoing conflicts, including the situation in Gaza, rising tensions in the Middle East with their broader global impact, and the prolonged war in Ukraine, "remind us of the fragility of peace and the limits of international consensus."
