Georgian Parliament Speaker Accuses EU of Interfering

(MENAFN) Georgian Parliament Speaker Shalva Papuashvili has criticized the European Union for meddling in Georgia's internal politics and imposing unrealistic political choices.

He drew parallels between the EU's actions and tactics employed by the Soviet Union, calling them reminiscent of Soviet-era strategies.

His remarks came after the European Commission issued a warning this week, stating that Georgia’s progress towards EU integration could be halted unless the Georgian government reverts to what Brussels considers a "democratic path" by the end of summer.

The EU also cautioned that visa-free travel for Georgian citizens might be revoked if the government does not meet specific conditions, including the repeal of the "foreign agents" law and the enhancement of LGBTQ+ rights.

“We see direct interference in the Georgian elections,” Papuashvili remarked on Friday, as reported by local media. “It seems that some of the political elite [in Brussels] have taken some skills from the Soviet Union.”

Georgia, which was once part of the Soviet Union, applied for EU membership in March 2022, shortly after the escalation of the conflict in Ukraine.

The country was granted candidate status in December 2023, but talks about its accession have since been suspended, with the Georgian government citing the increasingly coercive tone from Brussels.

Despite this, the government maintains its commitment to eventual EU membership.

The ruling Georgian Dream party, which won a decisive majority in last October's elections, has consistently accused Western powers of interfering in its political processes under the pretext of promoting democracy.
