Egypt, Qatar Push for Temporary Gaza Ceasefire

(MENAFN) On Sunday, Egypt and Qatar voiced optimism about reaching a prompt accord on a 60-day interim pause in hostilities between Israel and Hamas.

This initiative is intended to create the groundwork for a lasting cessation of conflict within the Gaza Strip.

In a combined declaration, both nations appealed to all involved sides “to exercise responsibility and support the efforts of mediators aimed at resolving the crisis in the Gaza Strip through restoring stability and calm to the region.”

They emphasized the necessity of collaborative engagement to de-escalate the situation.

The statement highlighted Egypt and Qatar's persistent diplomatic engagement “to bring views closer and address contentious points with a view to reaching a ceasefire agreement in the Gaza Strip,” anchored in a proposal advanced by U.S. President Biden's special envoy to the Middle East, Steve Witkoff.

This would permit a recommencement of indirect dialogue built upon this plan.

Furthermore, the two governments reiterated that they are “striving to swiftly reach a 60-day temporary truce, which would pave the way for a permanent ceasefire agreement in the Gaza Strip.”

Their goal is to leverage the short-term truce to forge a broader and enduring peace framework.

They noted that such a development “would facilitate the resolution of the unprecedented humanitarian crisis in the region, enable the opening of border crossings, and allow the entry of humanitarian and relief aid to alleviate the suffering faced by the Palestinian people in Gaza.”

The truce would thereby ease critical shortages and improve living conditions for civilians.

Cairo and Doha also emphasized that this initiative “aims to bring an end to the war entirely and initiate the reconstruction of the Gaza Strip,” in line with the blueprint endorsed during the emergency Arab summit held in Cairo on March 4.

Meanwhile, an Israeli newspaper reported earlier the same day that Hamas had rejected Witkoff’s proposal, which the envoy described as “totally unacceptable.”

This response suggests that, despite Israeli assertions that Hamas is under “severe pressure,” the group remains resilient and is not on the verge of collapse.
